At least five people were killed and seven were left injured Thursday after gunmen opened fire on a passenger vehicle.
Police said the passenger vehicle was on its way from Gilgit to Niltar Bala when it was fired upon at the RC bridge by unidentified suspects.
Five people were killed while seven were injured. The injured were shifted to the Gilgit Hospital for treatment, said police.
The five deceased all hailed from Niltar Bala, where the passenger vehicle was travelling to, said police.
Police officials have arrived at the scene and have started gathering evidence for an investigation into the crime.
Gilgit SSP Mirza Hassan said that the injured were shifted to a hospital in Gilgit. The incident occurred some 35 kilometers away from Gilgit.
Soon after the incident, the GB Home Department ordered the law enforcement agencies to stay on “red alert” and ensure security of all public buildings and sensitive places.
GB Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid has ordered the security agencies to find the attackers and arrest them.
In a statement, the chief minister said the killers would be brought to justice and the government would take every possible step to maintain law and order in the region.
