The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has started considering the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as the second option to host the T20 World Cup later this year.
Following the worsening COVID-19 condition in India, a BCCI official told BBC’s Stumped podcast that they will move to UAE if the situation in India doesn’t get better.
“I’ve just been named one of the tournament directors, so I’m doing everything we can to make sure it happens,” said Dhiraj Malhotra – general manager for game development with the BCCI.
“It would be the UAE. We’re hoping again that it would be done by the BCCI. So, we’ll take the tournament there, but it’ll still be done by the BCCI,” he added.
Currently, India is hosting their premium cricket tournament the Indian Premier League (IPL) despite the worst situation in the country due to COVID-19. Covid death toll in India has passed 200,000, with at least 300,000 new infections every day in the past week.
The mega event is scheduled in October-November this year.
