ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced the launch of the country’s largest and most advanced tax audit program, aiming to review over 7 million income tax returns this fiscal year.
According to sources, the audit will leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools alongside advanced Microsoft Excel filters and formulas to identify taxpayers who may have underpaid their taxes or declared lower amounts than in previous years. The initiative is part of FBR’s broader efforts to expand the tax base, enhance revenue collection, and ensure greater transparency in the taxation system.
The audit will be conducted in three phases with the participation of around 8,000 Inland Revenue officers and 4,000 auditors. The first phase will target the commercial and industrial sectors, followed by the second phase focusing on single-owner and registered companies. The final phase will scrutinize individual taxpayers’ returns.
FBR sources emphasized that this audit is not only aimed at detecting discrepancies but also at encouraging voluntary compliance among taxpayers. The use of AI and digital tools is expected to accelerate the review process and ensure data-driven decision-making, reducing manual errors and improving efficiency.
Officials say the program reflects the government’s commitment to modernizing the tax system while holding individuals and companies accountable for their tax obligations.
