Shujaat directs PML-Q leaders to prepare for local govt elections

Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid faction (PML-Q) President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has directed party officials to begin preparations for the upcoming local government elections.

The party office-bearers met Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain at his residence today and held discussions regarding the local government polls and the restructuring of the party.

During the meeting, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain’s son, Chaudhry Shafay Hussain, who is the Punjab Minister for Industries, Commerce & Investment, and Auqaf & Religious Affairs in the sitting Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz group’s (PML-N) coalition government, was also present and stated that the PML-Q would participate actively in the local government elections in Punjab.

On October 20, 2025, the 24NewsHD TV channel reported that all obstacles to holding local government elections in Punjab had been removed after Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan signed the Punjab Local Government Act 2025.

According to the report, with the new law now in effect, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will begin fresh delimitation and constituency demarcation in accordance with the updated framework.

The Punjab Assembly Secretariat had forwarded the act to the Governor after it was approved by the assembly.

The Election Commission has already decided to hold local government elections in Punjab in December, and the enactment of the new legislation brings clarity and legal structure to the upcoming polls.

It is also worth mentioning that Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, on November 4, 2025, hinted that the upcoming local government (LG) elections in Punjab may be held on a non-party basis.

Speaking to journalists, Tarar said that local government elections in the province should be held on time and that the provincial minister for local bodies was already working on the matter.

He noted that such non-party-based local elections had been held in the past as well, adding that the government had empowered local representatives at the district and municipal levels.
