Chile has introduced a new artificial intelligence system called Latam GPT, created especially for Latin American. The main goal of this project is to make sure that the region has an AI tool that truly understands its people, cultures, and languages.
Many popular AI systems today are built in the United States and mostly trained on English content. Because of this, they often reflect American views and may not fully understand the history, traditions, or daily realities of Latin American countries. Chile wanted to change that. With Latam GPT, the focus is on local knowledge and regional identity.
The project was developed by Chile’s National Center for Artificial Intelligence, along with support from experts and institutions across Latin America. The system has been trained using information from the region, so it can better understand Spanish and Portuguese as they are spoken in different countries. In the future, developers also plan to include Indigenous languages to make it even more inclusive.
Another important feature of Latam GPT is that it is open source. This means that developers, universities, and organizations can use it, improve it, and adapt it for different needs. It can be used in schools, hospitals, businesses, and government offices to create tools that better serve local communities.
Although Latam GPT may not be as large or powerful as some global AI systems, its creators say that is not the main point. The real purpose is to build technology that represents Latin America fairly and accurately.
With this launch, Chile is sending a clear message: Latin America wants to take part in shaping the future of technology, not just follow it.
