Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) announced it will formally demand former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s extradition from India. The move matters because Hasina faces a death sentence for crimes against humanity. This action directly affects Hasina, India, and Bangladesh’s political and legal landscape.
Salahuddin Ahmed, a BNP leader elected from Cox’s Bazar-1, told reporters the party will legally press India for her return. He emphasized that the extradition request follows Bangladesh’s legal framework and court rulings. BNP plans to coordinate closely with Bangladesh’s foreign ministry on this matter.
Ahmed added that the issue falls under the jurisdiction of the foreign ministries of Bangladesh and India. BNP will urge India to send Hasina back promptly for trial. The party insists that all legal procedures will be respected during the process.
Sheikh Hasina fled to India in August 2024 after a public uprising against her government. BNP leaders claim she has avoided facing justice, calling her election comments in India provocative. This development heightens tensions between Bangladesh’s ruling and opposition parties.
Last November, a Dhaka court sentenced Hasina to death for crimes against humanity. BNP officials said they will continue pursuing the case through diplomatic channels. Meanwhile, observers expect the issue to dominate Bangladesh’s political discourse in coming months.
