China warns US: don’t risk conflict, choose cooperation over decoupling

At the Munich Security Conference, China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, cautioned against sudden moves by the United States to sever economic and trade ties with Beijing. He emphasized that a cooperative approach would benefit both nations, calling on Washington to adopt a “positive and pragmatic” policy.

Wang Yi met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in what officials described as a “constructive” discussion. Topics included plans for a potential visit to Beijing by US President Donald Trump in April, signaling a desire to stabilize relations after a year of trade and tariff tensions.

While the US and Europe are increasingly worried about reliance on China for raw materials and supply chains, Wang Yi warned that some voices in the US are attacking China, fueling calls for decoupling and supply chain separation. He stressed that such actions, including attempts to interfere in Taiwan, could push the two powers toward conflict.

China, he said, hopes for cooperation but is prepared to handle all risks. Wang Yi noted that recent positive signals from the White House, showing respect for President Xi Jinping and the Chinese people, were encouraging, but caution remains critical amid competing narratives in the US.
