Yasmin Rashid challenges Nawaz Sharif’s victory in Supreme Court

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Dr Yasmin Rashid has approached the Supreme Court challenging the electoral victory of Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif in the recent general elections.

Dr Yasmin Rashid contested the election as a PTI-backed candidate. After losing the contest, she had filed a petition before the Election Tribunal. However, the tribunal dismissed her plea.

Now, she has filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the tribunal’s decision. In her petition, she argued that the Election Tribunal rejected her case on technical grounds. She maintained that the tribunal failed to properly examine the facts and the legal aspects of the matter.

According to the appeal, changes were made in Form 45. She stated that such alterations go against the constitutional requirement of transparency in elections. She argued that the credibility of the electoral process is compromised when official result documents are modified.

The petition further stated that it is a legal requirement to issue notices to all contesting candidates before compiling and finalising election results. Dr Yasmin Rashid claimed that no notice was issued to her during the process of preparing the final results.

She contended that this omission violated due process and her legal rights as a candidate. The appeal stressed that the Election Tribunal did not adequately address these concerns.

Dr Yasmin Rashid has requested the Supreme Court to declare the tribunal’s decision null and void. She has also asked the court to declare her as the returned candidate.
