Mojtaba Khamenei poised to succeed father, reports Israeli media

Reports from Israeli media suggest that Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been selected as Iran’s new supreme leader. A formal announcement could be made in the coming hours, according to these sources.

However, Iranian state media presents a different timeline. Officials say the selection process is ongoing and may take up to a week. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has indicated that a formal announcement will follow the completion of Khamenei’s funeral ceremonies.

Mojtaba Khamenei, born in 1969 in Mashhad, is both a cleric and a political figure with deep influence in Iran’s security and political circles. He participated in the Iran-Iraq War and has been linked to political activities during the 2009 post-election protests.

He spent part of his childhood in the northwestern cities of Sardasht and Mahabad. In 2004, he married Zahra Haddad Adel. Politically, he has been associated with former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and was placed under US sanctions in 2019.
