US President Donald Trump said that “very good talks” are currently taking place with Iran, but stressed that the United States will not allow Tehran to “blackmail” the world over the Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking briefly at the Oval Office, Trump described Iran’s behaviour as a long-standing pattern lasting for 47 years.
He said Iranian leaders want to close the Strait of Hormuz, but warned that Washington will not permit them to use the waterway as leverage.
Trump added that the United States is maintaining a firm stance on the issue and will not be pressured by Iranian actions.
Earlier, Iran’s military leadership has announced renewed strict control over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, linking the move to ongoing tensions with the United States over maritime access and regional security.
According to statements from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the key global oil transit route will remain under tight supervision until what Tehran describes as “full freedom of navigation” for Iranian vessels is restored. Iranian officials accused the US of enforcing a blockade under the pretext of security operations, calling it a violation of international maritime norms.
The development comes amid heightened regional instability following weeks of conflict involving the US and Israel. While limited ship movements have resumed in the area, uncertainty continues to surround safe passage through the strait, which is critical for global energy supplies.
