NEW DELHI: The remarks made by US President Donald Trump have reignited debate over India’s global image and diplomatic standing.
According to reports, Trump, in a statement posted on his social media platform, described India as a “hellhole,” triggering strong reactions across the country.
The opposition party Indian National Congress condemned the remarks as not only insulting but also anti-India.
Party leaders said that the policies and weak diplomacy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi are pushing the country toward international isolation.
Congress leaders further argued that the Modi government’s ideology-driven policies, particularly those linked to Hindutva, have damaged India’s global reputation.
They also expressed concern over the government’s silence despite repeated statements from Trump.
Political analysts noted that describing a country in such terms reflects growing international scrutiny over its internal conditions, including human rights.
Experts added that recent signs of strain and distance in relations between the United States and India have become increasingly visible, which could impact future ties between the two nations.
Meanwhile, critics said that the Modi government’s policy approach and its muted response to global criticism are contributing to mounting diplomatic challenges, the effects of which are becoming evident in India’s international standing.
