Petition challenging hike in petroleum prices lands in LHC

Judicial Activism Panel (JAP) filed a joint petition in the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Saturday challenging the recent increase in prices of petroleum and requested to declare the same as null and void.

The federal government, Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), and other relevant departments were made parties.

The petition stated that the current hike is the first in history. The petitioner said that petroleum is available at the rate of Rs393.35 per liter.

The petitioner said that the government received Rs1.2 trillion under the head of petroleum development levy (PDL), but no relief was provided to the common man.

The petitioner warned that a Rs26.77 per liter increase in petrol will increase inflation. Petitioner said that petroleum prices are directly attached to transport.

They appealed to the Court to interfere in this issue and declare the increase in petroleum price as null and void to provide relief to the common man.
