Myanmar reduces Aung San Suu Kyi’s prison sentence again

YANGON: Myanmar’s detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has received another reduction in her prison sentence, according to a member of her legal team.

The lawyer said on Thursday that her sentence has been cut by an additional one-sixth as part of an amnesty decision. This marks the second reduction in just two weeks.

Aung San Suu Kyi, 80, has been held in detention since the military takeover in 2021. She was later convicted in multiple cases, including corruption, election-related charges, and violations of state secrecy laws. Her supporters have consistently rejected the charges, calling them politically motivated.

Her original sentence, which totalled 33 years after several trials, was later reduced to 27 years. With the latest adjustment, she now has just over 18 years remaining, according to her legal representative.

Earlier this month, Myanmar authorities also issued a New Year amnesty that reduced sentences for several prisoners and led to the release of some political figures, including former president Win Myint, who was also convicted alongside her.

State media recently announced a broader sentence commutation for prisoners, which is believed to have contributed to the latest reduction.

Despite these developments, Aung San Suu Kyi remains in an undisclosed location. She has not been seen in public since her arrest following the 2021 military coup. Her legal team and family have not been granted direct access to her.

The military government has faced ongoing international pressure to release political detainees, with regional and global actors repeatedly calling for democratic reforms and dialogue.
