Three Indian sailors have been confirmed dead following a US military strike on an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman. The vessel, identified as the Palau-flagged MT Settebello, was struck earlier this week during a US naval operation in the region.
The ship was carrying 24 Indian crew members at the time of the incident. According to reports, 21 crew members were successfully rescued after the attack, while three were initially reported missing. Authorities later confirmed that all three missing sailors have died.
The US military said the tanker was targeted after it allegedly failed to comply with instructions and was accused of attempting to transport oil in violation of restrictions related to Iran. The strike reportedly involved precision munitions that hit the vessel’s engine room.
Indian authorities have described the incident as deeply unfortunate. The government has also confirmed that efforts were made to coordinate with local maritime authorities for rescue operations and assistance to survivors.
The Indian Shipping Ministry stated that the bodies of the deceased sailors will be repatriated soon. Officials have also expressed concern over the safety of commercial seafarers operating in conflict-prone waters.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about maritime security in the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route. The region has seen repeated tensions in recent days involving commercial vessels and military actions.
Diplomatic engagement is also underway, with India reportedly seeking clarification from US authorities regarding the circumstances of the strike and the safety protocols followed during the operation.
