Cape Verde’s World Cup hero Roberto Lopes was recruited through LinkedIn

In a football world filled with academy graduates, multimillion-dollar transfers, and carefully planned careers, the story of Roberto Lopes stands out as one of the most remarkable tales of this FIFA World Cup.

The 33-year-old defender, born and raised in Dublin, is preparing for the biggest match of his life as Cape Verde get ready to face Spain in a historic World Cup clash. But what makes Lopes’ journey extraordinary is how it all began — with a LinkedIn message he almost deleted.

Before becoming an international footballer, Lopes balanced his sporting ambitions with a regular job as a mortgage adviser in Dublin. While playing part-time football for Irish club Bohemians, he received a message in Portuguese from former Cape Verde coach Rui Aguas in 2019.

At first glance, Lopes assumed it was spam.

“I thought it was a spam message and I took no notice of it,” he later revealed.

However, curiosity eventually got the better of him. After translating the message, he discovered that Cape Verde’s football federation wanted him to represent the country through his father’s family heritage. The opportunity immediately sparked excitement.

“I was absolutely buzzing with that. I was like, ‘Yep, 100% I’d love to be a part of the squad,’” Lopes recalled.

Since accepting that unexpected invitation, his football journey has transformed dramatically. Now playing for Shamrock Rovers, Lopes has become a key figure in Cape Verde’s rise on the international stage.

For a nation of just over 525,000 people, qualifying for the FIFA World Cup was already a historic achievement. Ranked 67th in the world, Cape Verde are among the smallest countries ever to reach football’s biggest tournament. Alongside Spain, they will also face Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group H.

For Lopes, the moment carries deep personal meaning beyond football.

“Being able to represent my family playing for the national team and being able to put our family name out there at one of the biggest sporting events in the world fills me with great pride,” he said.

From an overlooked LinkedIn message to the bright lights of the FIFA World Cup, Roberto Lopes’ story proves that sometimes life-changing opportunities arrive in the most unexpected places. His journey has become one of the tournament’s most inspiring and heartwarming stories.
