Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has reiterated that any talks with the United States will remain strictly within Tehran’s “red lines.” He said Iran will not compromise on national interests and warned of a “crushing response” if pressured.
His remarks follow a recently signed US–Iran memorandum aimed at ending months of regional conflict and opening a pathway for further negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme. Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian, have also stressed that Iran will protect its sovereignty, dignity, and strategic interests during any future talks.
The agreement lays the foundation for 60 days of negotiations, including discussions on sanctions relief and nuclear commitments. However, follow-up talks remain uncertain after a scheduled meeting in Switzerland was postponed.
The deal also outlines broader regional arrangements, including steps toward ending hostilities across multiple fronts and easing restrictions in key maritime routes. Despite this, political divisions within Iran persist, with conservative voices warning against concessions to Washington.
In parallel developments, tensions have sharply escalated in the Middle East following renewed Israeli military operations in Lebanon.
Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir issued a hardline statement calling for severe escalation against Lebanon after the killing of four Israeli soldiers. His remarks sparked widespread criticism internationally, as calls for restraint and de-escalation continue.
Meanwhile, Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid criticised the government, warning that strained relations with the United States and European allies could damage Israel’s diplomatic standing.
On the ground, fighting in southern Lebanon has intensified. Israeli strikes reportedly killed multiple civilians and targeted areas in Nabatieh and surrounding towns, while the Israeli military said it was striking Hezbollah positions in response to ceasefire violations.
Hezbollah, in turn, claimed attacks on Israeli forces and reported ongoing clashes. The escalation has resulted in heavy casualties and widespread destruction, further complicating efforts to stabilise the region.
