At least one fighter jet escorted the plane carrying late Iranian leader Ali Khamenei to his final burial in the eastern holy city of Mashhad on Thursday, footage from the supreme leader’s website showed.
Khamenei’s coffin, alongside those of family members killed in US-Israeli strikes in February that began the Middle East war, were transported from Iraq where massive crowds attended funeral ceremonies in the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.
Official news agency IRNA shared footage of the Mahan Air flight taxiing at the airport after landing in Khamenei’s home city. He was transferred from Iraq, where ceremonies took place in the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.
The burial will be the final act of a multi-day funeral, after Iran’s leader for more than three decades lay in state in Tehran before being processed through the Iranian capital and the holy Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala.
Khamenei was martyred on February 28 in the US-Israeli strikes that began the Middle East war.
