Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that it launched attacks on US military positions in Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait and Iraq, escalating tensions in the region.
According to the IRGC, Iranian forces targeted a US naval facility at Camp Tytin in Jordan with ballistic missiles. The Iranian military claimed that the strike caused several US military casualties and destroyed a number of American helicopters at the site.
The IRGC also claimed that Iranian forces targeted US drones stationed at Prince Hassan Air Base in Jordan. It further alleged that American pilots and technical personnel were killed in the attack.
Iran also claimed that its forces used drones to target a US military facility in Bahrain. Bahraini authorities, however, said their air defences intercepted and destroyed the Iranian drones before they could cause significant damage.
Jordan separately reported that Iranian forces fired 13 ballistic missiles toward its territory. Jordanian air defences intercepted 10 of the missiles in the air, while the remaining three fell in areas away from populated centres, according to Jordanian authorities.
The conflicting accounts have made it difficult to independently verify the extent of the damage and casualties. While the IRGC claimed that its attacks caused deaths and destroyed US military equipment, US officials said the Iranian attack in Jordan caused no American casualties.
The reported strikes mark another serious escalation involving Iran and US forces and highlight the growing risk of the conflict spreading across the Middle East. Regional governments have increased their air-defence measures as Iranian missiles and drones continue to pose a potential threat to US military installations and other strategic sites in the region.
