Pakistan’s current account deficit shrinks by 70pc to $98m in August 2026: SBP

Pakistan’s current account deficit narrowed by around 70 percent year-on-year to $98 million in August 2026, compared with $324 million in the same month last year, it was reported on Friday.

According to data from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the August figure came after the current account deficit for July was revised upward to $445 million, from the previously reported $328 million.

During the first two months of FY2026-27, Pakistan’s current account deficit stood at $543 million, down 36 percent from $853 million recorded during the same period last year.

According to market analysis, the improvement in August was supported by a narrower goods trade deficit, which fell by around $127 million month-on-month to approximately $3 billion.

Pakistan recorded around $5.5 billion in imports and $2.5 billion in exports during the month. Strong remittance inflows also supported the country’s external account position, according to recent reporting based on SBP data.
