A man was caught red-handed while allegedly digging up the body of a young girl from a grave in Peshawar’s Sheikhan area on Monday, prompting the police to launch an immediate investigation into a disturbing series of alleged grave desecrations, it was reported on Monday.
According to local residents, the suspect had been digging up the graves of young girls and removing their bodies from the area’s graveyard for about a month.
Residents said the suspect was caught while he was digging up a grave and removing a girl’s corpse. He was apprehended by locals and handed over to the Sheikhan police post, who subsequently transferred him to Budh Bher police station for investigation.
Moreover, the residents identified the suspect as Salman and claimed that he was an Afghan national.
Peshawar Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Dr Mian Saeed Ahmed took immediate notice of the incident and ordered a transparent and comprehensive investigation.
The CCPO sought an immediate report from the SHO of Budh Bher and directed the formation of a police team to investigate the incident.
Police officials said all aspects of the case would be thoroughly examined and directed the investigation team to ensure a complete and candid probe.
The CCPO also appealed to local residents to remain peaceful and urged the public to exercise patience and restraint until the investigation is completed.
The incident has raised serious questions about the alleged motive behind the repeated digging up of young girls’ graves and stealing their bodies, with police now investigating whether the arrested suspect was involved in similar incidents in the area.
