ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah have been appointed as members of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP).
A notification announcing the appointments was issued with the approval of Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, who chairs the judicial commission.
The appointments follow the resignations of Pakistan Peoples Party leader Farooq H Naek and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Aftab Sheikh from the judicial commission.
The Judicial Commission of Pakistan is a constitutional body responsible for the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court, the Federal Shariat Court and the high courts.
Under the framework revised by the 26th Constitutional Amendment in October 2024, the commission includes members of the judiciary, the government, parliament and the legal profession, as well as a woman or non-Muslim nominee.
The commission considers candidates for senior judicial appointments and makes decisions under the constitutional process governing the selection of judges.
