ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has said that certain remarks made by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman during his recent speech would have been better left unsaid. However, he also criticised the response to the speech, describing the personal attacks against the JUI-F chief as inappropriate.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament House in Islamabad on Friday, Barrister Gohar said political leaders should demonstrate responsibility and play a constructive role in reducing tensions rather than creating further divisions.
He said the entire nation could collectively confront external challenges, but internal divisions and political instability could cause even greater damage to the country.
The PTI chairman observed that political tensions had already reached an alarming level and warned against taking further steps that could deepen the existing divisions.
He stressed that political leaders needed to exercise restraint and avoid statements or actions that could create more hostility among different political groups.
Barrister Gohar also clarified that his party did not intend to cross any red lines, reiterating its position that Pakistan and the state must always come first.
He said all political forces should prioritise national interests and refrain from actions that could undermine political leadership, democratic institutions and the democratic process.
Discussing electoral reforms, the PTI chairman called for equal representation of the government and opposition in the reform process.
He stressed that electoral reforms should be impartial, transparent and reflective of public aspirations. He maintained that both sides should have an equal role in shaping changes to the electoral system to ensure credibility and public confidence in future elections.
