PDMA warns flood situation may worsen as Punjab rivers remain in spate; death toll hits 41

Pakistan flood, rain-related fatalities reach 874

Pakistan’s flood death toll, since June 26, has reached 874 with 1,153 injured across the country in various rain, flood-related incidents.

KP leads with most fatalities with 488 deaths, followed by Punjab’s 216, Sindh’s 58, GB’s 41, AJK’s 37, Balochistan’s 26 and eight in Islamabad.

Azma Bokhari says 1m evacuated in Punjab floods

Punjab’s Information Minister Azma Bokhari has said that as many as one million people have been evacuated to safe locations from flood-hit areas.

“More than 708,000 cattle have also been shifted to safer places,” she said while speaking to the media, adding that the death toll from floods in the province has reached 41.

“India’s Bhakra Dam has reached its 95% storage capacity. If the water is released [by India] it will flow [downstream] to Punjab,” Bokhari warned.

Floods situation may worsen, warns PDMA chief

Punjab PDMA DG Irfan Ali Kathia said that protective embankments may be breached to save urban populations if critical gauges are attained.

The floods, he added, have so far affected 3,243 villages and settlements, impacting more than 2.45 million people.

PDMA further warned that the flood surge from River Chenab will reach Multan tonight via Head Trimmu, while the next 24 hours at Head Sidhnai are critical.

If levels rise further, areas of Pir Mahal and Khanewal could come under threat, he said.

River waters are expected to reach Panjnad by September 5 and enter Sindh between September 6 and 7. Official have  said major decisions have been taken and will be enforced immediately if the situation worsens.

The devastating floods that have wreaked havoc in Punjab have killed more than 40 people across various districts of the province so far, the authorities have confirmed. At least seven people lost their lives in drowning incidents in a single day on Monday.
