T20 World Cup fallout, Aleem Dar resigns from Pakistan selection committee

In the wake of a poor performance in the T20 World Cup, the first ripple in the Pakistani camp has been felt in the back-end of the management, as Aleem Dar has put in his resignation to the PCB officials.

Aleem Dar, a member of the selection committee since October 11, 2024, has decided to put in his resignation after the poor performance of the Pakistani national team, which did not make it to the semi-finals of the tournament.

Currently, Aqib Javed and Asad Shafiq are a part of the selection committee, and their job is to identify and judge talent for future matches and events. However, to assist them in their duties, data analyst Usman Hashmi is also a part of the committee, although his role is only advisory, and he does not have a vote in the selection.

Sources close to the PCB reveal that Aleem Dar has put in his resignation, and although it has been stated to be a voluntary decision, there are speculations of the increasing pressure on the selection committee after a poor performance by the Pakistani national team in terms of consistency in batting and bowling.

The short tenure saw Dar face some controversy regarding his decisions regarding team composition and player selection, which might have affected team chemistry. The resignation provides an opportunity for the PCB to consider restructuring the selection committee ahead of future international commitments.

The PCB will assess applications for a replacement and might appoint a new committee member before the team’s next major assignment in the T20 format. Until then, there is an analysis of what went wrong during the World Cup and how to improve before the next test.

For Pakistan cricket, there is a simple moral of the story: the buck stops at the top, and the selection committee is not excluded from the outcomes of the team’s performances on the global stage. The question remains how the PCB will go about winning back trust and stability while outlining a plan for future successes.
