UNICEF warns of worsening polio outbreak in Afghanistan

A sharp rise in polio cases in Afghanistan has triggered renewed concerns over public health, with critics warning that administrative weaknesses and policy challenges are placing children at serious risk.

According to Afghan media outlet Khaama Press, the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF has expressed deep concern over the spread of polio in the country and has called for an accelerated vaccination campaign.

The agency stressed that immunisation for every child under the age of five is essential to control the disease and prevent long-term disability. It warned that failure to intensify vaccination efforts could expose thousands of children to permanent health complications.

UNICEF further highlighted that Afghanistan’s healthcare system is facing significant challenges, including insecurity, restricted access to remote areas, and ongoing logistical difficulties. These factors, it said, are directly affecting the reach and effectiveness of vaccination drives.

Health experts have also raised concerns, stating that governance issues and operational barriers are complicating efforts to contain the disease. They warned that continued disruptions could worsen public health conditions and increase the risk of wider outbreaks.

Analysts caution that without immediate and coordinated intervention, the situation could deteriorate further, leaving vulnerable populations—particularly children—at greater risk of preventable disability.
