Pahalgam incident sparks fresh allegations against India

The Pahalgam incident has once again drawn attention to what critics describe as a troubling pattern in India’s security history. Observers and rights advocates claim that so-called “false flag” operations have repeatedly been used to shift focus away from domestic unrest, rising extremism, and concerns over minority rights.

According to these claims, such incidents are often followed by strong narratives targeting Pakistan and Muslim communities, amplified by sections of the Indian media. Critics argue that this pattern fuels tension and deepens mistrust in an already volatile region.

In Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), reports allege that individuals taken into custody are later killed in staged encounters and presented as militants. On April 23, 2025, Indian forces reportedly killed two Kashmiris in what local sources described as a fake encounter. The incident was followed by accusations directed at Pakistan, a move that further escalated regional tensions.

Residents in the area have alleged heavy-handed tactics by security forces, claiming that ordinary civilians are sometimes labeled as militants after being killed. Some local voices also accuse authorities of using fear and force to maintain control, including violence against elderly citizens.

International observers have warned that if such practices continue, there is a risk of more alleged staged encounters in the future. They caution that portraying detainees or civilians as militants without transparent investigations could undermine credibility and human rights standards.

Amid these accusations, critics argue that the Pahalgam episode reflects a broader political strategy, suggesting it may have been used to serve domestic political interests. Indian authorities, however, have consistently denied allegations of staged operations and maintain that their actions are part of counterterrorism efforts.

The controversy surrounding the Pahalgam incident has once again intensified debate over accountability, media narratives, and the fragile security situation in the region.
