Spain PM dismisses Pentagon email report on Nato allies

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has dismissed a report that an internal Pentagon email explored options to punish Nato allies that did not support the US war on Iran, including suspending Spain from the alliance, Al Jazeera reported.

According to the report, the internal communication outlined possible measures against countries seen as reluctant to provide access, basing and overflight rights during the conflict, with Spain among those mentioned.

Sanchez rejected the significance of the reported email, saying Madrid responds only to formal and official positions rather than internal deliberations.

“We do not work off of emails, we work from official documents and position,” he said.

The comments come amid broader tensions between Washington and some Nato allies over their level of support for US operations in the Middle East.
