NEW YORK: The Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations together with the United Nations Office of Counter Terrorism (UNOCT) organized a joint event on “New and emerging trends in terrorism”.
The Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations emphasized that new trends in terrorism include the misuse of digital spaces — social media, encryption, and artificial intelligence. Pakistan advocated for tackling these threats, which it called “externally sponsored,” through global cooperation, citing its own extensive suffering as a victim of terrorism, with over 80,000 casualties and significant economic impact.
Policymakers, academics, diplomats, and representatives of civil society participated in the meeting. The joint event organized by Pakistan mission and UNOCT consisted of three sessions.
Discussions were also held on threats arising from communication technologies and the challenges faced by governments. Experts agreed on the need for an effective strategy to combat terrorism.
