Pakistan bans mango exports before June 1 over quality concerns

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Ministry of Commerce has officially imposed a ban on mango exports before June 1, following a request from fruit and vegetable exporters who raised concerns over quality, logistics, and seasonal conditions.

According to an amended export policy issued by the ministry, mango shipments will not be allowed prior to June 1 this season. However, officials clarified that all other existing terms and conditions of the mango export framework will remain unchanged.

The decision came after consultations with stakeholders in the horticulture export sector, who urged authorities to delay the export window in order to ensure better fruit maturity and improved market competitiveness.

Exporters associated with the fruit and vegetable trade highlighted several challenges influencing their demand, including unstable conditions in parts of the Middle East, rising freight charges, and changing weather patterns affecting production and supply chains. They also noted that climate change has begun impacting mango cultivation, making it necessary for fruit to remain longer on trees to achieve optimal sweetness, aroma, and overall quality.

Industry representatives further stressed that premature harvesting could harm Pakistan’s global reputation for premium mango varieties if quality standards are compromised in international markets.

Last year, Pakistan exported around 110,000 tons of mangoes, generating approximately $90 million in foreign exchange earnings. The country’s mango is widely regarded as a key agricultural export and is often referred to by exporters as a “national ambassador” in global markets.

For the current season, total mango production is projected to reach 2.5 million tons. Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association Patron-in-Chief Waheed Ahmed stated that export volumes this year are expected to range between 80,000 and 100,000 tons.

He added that a final export target for the season will be officially announced on May 15, once production assessments and market conditions are fully evaluated.
