Ali Zafar turns 2002 painting into AI-powered music video for Shiddat

Singer, actor and visual artist Ali Zafar has released a new AI-driven music video for his song Shiddat, reimagining one of his own paintings created in 2002 during his time at the National College of Arts.

The project transforms his original thesis-era artwork into a moving visual experience, blending traditional fine art with modern artificial intelligence tools. The video is part of his album Roshni and presents a stylised, dreamlike world built around the emotional tone of the painting.

Directed by Fawaz Rehan and Ayelah Asim, the video uses AI-based virtual production techniques to animate the original artwork. The visuals aim to preserve the texture and mood of the painting while expanding it into a cinematic narrative. Each frame has been digitally generated to create a seamless fusion of music, memory and visual art.

The song explores themes of love, longing and emotional distance. These ideas are reflected in the visual storytelling, where viewers are placed inside a surreal, shifting canvas that mirrors the emotional intensity of the track.

Ali Zafar said the painting holds personal significance, as it was created during his student years before his career in music and acting began. He described the work as “sacred” in the way its meaning continues to evolve over time.

He added that the concept of re-entering his own painting immediately appealed to him when it was proposed. The video, he said, represents an interpretation of his early artwork combined with one of the most emotionally intense songs from his album.

The release highlights a growing trend of using artificial intelligence in creative industries, where artists are increasingly blending traditional work with digital innovation. In this project, AI is used not only as a tool but as a medium to expand artistic expression.
