United States Consul General in Lahore, Stetson Sanders, Saturday called on Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani in Lahore, where both sides discussed Pakistan-US bilateral relations, trade and investment opportunities, as well as the prevailing regional situation.

During the meeting, Senate Chairman Gilani reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to further strengthening its long-standing relationship with the United States, emphasising that Islamabad highly values ties with Washington based on mutual respect, shared interests and constructive engagement.

Gilani highlighted the importance of expanding cooperation in key sectors, including trade, information technology, energy, minerals, agriculture, education and healthcare. He said Pakistan welcomes increased US investment and appreciates the contribution of American companies operating in the country.

Describing the United States as one of Pakistan’s most important economic partners, Gilani noted that the US remains the largest market for Pakistani exports and plays a significant role in Pakistan’s economic development.

The Senate chairman also stressed the importance of diplomacy and dialogue in promoting peace and stability in the region. He reiterated that Pakistan seeks constructive and positive relations with all countries in the region and supports efforts aimed at resolving disputes through peaceful means.

During the discussion, Gilani expressed concern over India’s actions related to the Indus Waters Treaty, warning that the use of water as a tool of political pressure and coercion poses a threat to regional peace and stability. He underscored the need for all countries to respect international laws and agreements.

Both sides agreed on the importance of enhancing parliamentary cooperation and increasing exchanges of delegations to further strengthen mutual understanding and bilateral engagement.

Gilani also acknowledged the valuable role of the Pakistani community in the United States, describing it as a strong bridge between the two nations. He added that people-to-people contacts and public relations remain important pillars of Pakistan-US relations.
