Punjab to launch 10,000 electric bikes under first-ever rental service

In a major step toward promoting sustainable urban mobility and reducing environmental pollution, the Punjab government has decided to introduce an electric bike (e-bike) rental service for the first time in the province. The initiative is aimed at providing citizens with an affordable, modern, and environmentally friendly transportation option while helping address traffic congestion and worsening air quality.

According to official sources, the project will begin with the deployment of 10,000 electric bikes under its first phase. To support the service, authorities plan to establish 300 docking and charging stations at key locations across Lahore, enabling users to conveniently rent, park, and recharge the vehicles.

The Punjab Housing Authority (PHA) has been tasked with providing land for the installation of the docking and charging facilities. Officials say the selected locations will be strategically placed near residential communities, commercial centres, educational institutions, and major public transport routes to improve urban connectivity.

The e-bike rental system is expected to function through a dedicated mobile application, allowing users to locate nearby bikes, make bookings, and complete payments digitally. Authorities believe the technology-driven service will make daily commuting easier and more efficient for students, office workers, and other residents.

Government officials say the initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernise the province’s transportation network and encourage the adoption of clean energy solutions. By offering an alternative to conventional fuel-powered vehicles, the project is expected to reduce dependence on private transport and lower traffic volumes on busy city roads.

Environmental experts have welcomed the move, noting that the increased use of electric vehicles can significantly contribute to reducing carbon emissions. Officials estimate that the project could help cut thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions annually in Lahore, a city that regularly faces severe air pollution and smog during the winter months.

The project will be implemented through a coordinated effort involving the Lahore Parking Company (LePark), the Transport Department, Safe City Authority, and other relevant government agencies. These institutions will work together to ensure smooth operations, user safety, and effective management of the service.

Speaking about the initiative, the Secretary Housing said the e-bike rental programme reflects the government’s commitment to introducing innovative and environmentally responsible solutions for urban transportation. He stated that the service would not only help reduce fuel costs for commuters but also play an important role in easing traffic congestion and improving overall environmental conditions.
