ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held separate meetings with candidates for the post of United Nations Secretary-General, reaffirming Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to multilateral cooperation and its continued support for the UN’s role in promoting global peace, security and sustainable development.
During a meeting at the Prime Minister’s House, UN Secretary-General candidate Macky Sall was welcomed by the prime minister, who reiterated Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to multilateral cooperation and expressed the country’s firm support for the United Nations’ central role in addressing global affairs.
The prime minister expressed hope that the next UN leadership would effectively advance the organisation’s three core pillars—international peace and security, development, and human rights—in a balanced and meaningful manner.
Shehbaz Sharif also reaffirmed Pakistan’s consistent commitment to upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, ensuring full implementation of UN Security Council resolutions, and respecting international law and treaties to promote global peace, security and prosperity.
Macky Sall appreciated Pakistan’s longstanding and valuable contributions to the United Nations and praised the country’s constructive leadership in ongoing efforts to promote international peace.
In a separate meeting, UN Secretary-General candidate Rebeca Grynspan also called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister’s House.
During the meeting, the prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to multilateral cooperation and its enduring dedication to promoting and upholding the principles and objectives of the UN Charter.
He stressed that the effective implementation of UN Security Council resolutions, along with respect for international law and global agreements, was essential for advancing global peace, security and prosperity.
The prime minister also underscored the need for balanced progress across the United Nations’ three core pillars—peace and security, development, and human rights. He particularly highlighted the importance of effectively implementing the global development agenda and strengthening international cooperation to help developing countries address their challenges.Rebeca Grynspan commended Pakistan’s longstanding and valuable role at the United Nations and also appreciated the country’s recent constructive efforts toward promoting regional peace.
A few days earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had also met UN Secretary-General candidate María Fernanda Espinosa at the Prime Minister’s House, where both sides agreed on the importance of multilateral cooperation, an effective UN role, respect for international law, and the promotion of global peace and prosperity.
