India, Afghanistan share DNA’: Afghan minister’s remark goes viral

Afghanistan’s Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Minister Mawlavi Attaullah Omari has drawn criticism on social media after saying that India and Afghanistan share the same DNA during his visit to New Delhi.

The remarks were made during a press conference in the Indian capital, where Omari described his visit as a positive experience and praised the welcome he received from Indian officials.

The Afghan minister said he felt comfortable in India and described the atmosphere as being among familiar people. Responding to a question from an Indian journalist, he said that “our DNA and your DNA are the same.”

A video clip of his comments quickly spread across social media platforms, generating mixed reactions from users. Some welcomed the statement as a reflection of cultural and historical links, while others criticised it and questioned the political message behind the remarks.

Several social media users mocked the comment, linking it with ongoing regional tensions and political disputes involving Afghanistan, India and Pakistan.

The statement also drew criticism from some Pakistani commentators, who argued that such remarks ignored serious regional security concerns. They claimed that Pakistan has repeatedly raised concerns about cross-border militancy and alleged involvement of external actors in security issues.

Critics also referred to human rights issues and political developments in the region while questioning the comparison made by the Afghan minister.

However, supporters of Omari’s statement viewed it as a diplomatic gesture highlighting historical, cultural and people-to-people connections between Afghanistan and India.

The controversy comes as Afghanistan continues to engage with regional countries on diplomatic, economic and political issues. Officials from different sides have frequently highlighted historical ties while also facing criticism over sensitive regional matters.
