The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on Monday recommended the appointment of additional judges to the Sindh High Court and Islamabad High Court, confirmed four additional judges of the Peshawar High Court, and approved extensions for the constitutional benches of the Sindh High Court and the tenure of one additional judge.
The commission met at the Supreme Court building in Islamabad under the chairmanship of Chief Justice of Pakistan. The meeting, held from 2pm to 5:30pm, considered appointments, confirmations and extensions relating to the Sindh High Court, Islamabad High Court and Peshawar High Court.
Sindh High Court
The commission, by a majority of its total membership, recommended extending the tenure of Justice Khalid Hussain Shahani as an additional judge of the Sindh High Court for six months after reviewing his record, antecedents and other relevant material.
However, the commission did not recommend confirming Justice Syed Fiaz-ul-Hassan Shah as a permanent judge of the Sindh High Court.
The commission also approved, by majority, a three-month extension in the tenure of the Constitutional Benches of the Sindh High Court.
For vacant positions on the Sindh High Court, the commission recommended the appointment of three additional judges:
- Muhammad Humayon Khan, Advocate
- Suresh Kumar, District and Sessions Judge
- Dr. Shah Nawaz Memon, Advocate
Although five vacancies were under consideration, the remaining two positions could not be filled because no nominee secured the required majority of the commission’s total membership.
Islamabad High Court
The commission recommended the appointment of three additional judges to the Islamabad High Court:
- Ayyaz Shaukat, Advocate
- Shahrukh Arjumand, District and Sessions Judge
- Umair Majeed Malik, Advocate
The recommendations were approved by a majority of the commission’s total membership.
Peshawar High Court
The commission also recommended the confirmation of four additional judges as permanent judges of the Peshawar High Court after reviewing their credentials, antecedents and evaluation reports.
The judges confirmed are:
- Justice Farah Jamshed
- Justice Inaam Ullah Khan
- Justice Sabit Ullah Khan
- Justice Aurangzeb
The recommendations were made by a majority of the commission’s total membership.
The Judicial Commission of Pakistan is constitutionally responsible for recommending appointments and confirmations of judges to the superior judiciary. The commission evaluates nominees on the basis of their professional record, integrity, antecedents and other relevant material before forwarding its recommendations under the constitutional process.
