The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly has approved for debate a resolution seeking the establishment of a Truth Commission to investigate recent events and address the ongoing crisis in the region.
The resolution was tabled by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Azad Kashmir President Chaudhry Yasin on Thursday.
The resolution called for the creation of a Truth Commission to establish the facts surrounding the unrest and pay tribute to police officers and security personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The PPP’s resolution stated that protests should be called off until the commission completes and presents its findings.
The resolution also called for impartial legal action against those responsible for worsening the situation, regardless of their affiliation.
Earlier, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari renewed his demand for the establishment of an independent Truth and Reconciliation Commission, saying it was essential to resolve the continuing crisis in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
According to 24NewsHD TV, Bilawal made the remarks in a video message before the AJK polls on Sunday, saying he had repeatedly proposed the formation of such a commission but had yet to receive a positive response.
Addressing voters in Mirpur, he appealed for public support to help advance the initiative. He said the proposed commission would help ease the daily hardships faced by the people of Kashmir and ensure their concerns were properly addressed.
Bilawal said every public complaint should be heard through the commission and that every affected family deserved justice. He added that the proposed body would provide an independent and impartial mechanism to investigate grievances, establish the truth and promote reconciliation.
