MAKKAH: Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan have signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, committing the three countries to enhance collective security, strengthen defence cooperation and promote peace and stability in the region and beyond.
The agreement was signed during the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Summit for Joint Defence, held at Al-Safa Palace in Makkah on August 7, 2026, following a visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the invitation of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, President Erdogan and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed the agreement, which reflects the three countries’ “shared commitment to further strengthening their collective security and to promoting peace, security, and stability in the region and beyond.”
The summit reviewed the “distinguished relations” among Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan, along with several issues of mutual interest.
Guided by their “longstanding historical ties” and the “enduring bonds of brotherhood and Islamic solidarity” between the three states, the leaders built upon their shared strategic interests and existing defence cooperation to establish a stronger framework for joint security efforts.
The agreement is aimed at strengthening “collective deterrence against any act of aggression” and states that “any armed attack against any one of the three States shall be regarded as an attack against them all.”
It also provides for the expansion of defence cooperation in all areas among Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan, as the three countries seek to advance a more secure and stable future.
Earlier today, the leadership of Pakistan, which has been acting as a mediator to end the US-Iran war, met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman in Makkah.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir, along with other leaders, met him at Qasr al-Safa.
According to the PM Office, a bilateral meeting took place with the high-powered delegation in attendance.
Nuclear-armed Pakistan signed a mutual defence agreement with Saudi Arabia last year, committing both sides to treat any aggression against either country as an attack on both.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Jeddah on Thursday, where he was received by Makkah Deputy Governor Prince Saud bin Mishal bin Abdulaziz.
Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir later joined the Pakistani delegation, which also includes Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi.
On Friday morning, the delegation visited the Holy Kaaba and performed Umrah, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
Prime Minister Shehbaz is also scheduled to visit Masjid-i-Nabvi (PBUH) in Madina.
