National Assembly Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai has written a letter to the prime minister, calling for the appointment of the chief election commissioner and members of the Election Commission of Pakistan whose terms have expired, it was reported on Monday.
According to the letter, the tenure of the chief election commissioner and ECP members from Sindh and Balochistan expired on January 26, 2025.
Achakzai said the Constitution requires appointments to key positions in the Election Commission to be made in accordance with the prescribed constitutional procedure.
He said the prime minister is required to appoint the chief election commissioner in consultation with the leader of the opposition.
The opposition leader also stressed that members of the Election Commission representing the provinces should be appointed through the procedure laid down in the Constitution.
Achakzai urged the government to initiate the constitutional process for filling the positions without further delay.
