Pakistan delivers strong demarche to US over Kashmir

Pakistan has lodged a strong diplomatic protest with the United States over remarks by the US ambassador to India concerning the status of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Foreign Office summoned the US chargé d’affaires in Islamabad on Wednesday and conveyed Pakistan’s objections to the ambassador’s comments made during a visit to the disputed region.

According to the Foreign Office, Pakistan firmly rejected the description of Jammu and Kashmir as part of India. Islamabad reiterated that the region remains an internationally recognised disputed territory.

Pakistan maintained that the final status of Jammu and Kashmir must be determined in line with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

The Foreign Office said the US ambassador’s remarks were factually incorrect and irresponsible. It also argued that the comments were inconsistent with the United States’ longstanding position on the Kashmir dispute.

Islamabad further said the statement did not align with the principles of international law and the UN Charter. Pakistan urged Washington to maintain consistency in its public statements regarding the disputed territory.

The Foreign Office also acknowledged US President Donald Trump’s offer to mediate between Pakistan and India on the Kashmir issue following the recent tensions between the two countries.

However, Pakistan stressed that any US statements on Kashmir should reflect the territory’s disputed status.

The diplomatic protest comes amid continued differences between Pakistan and India over Jammu and Kashmir. Islamabad has repeatedly called for a settlement based on international commitments and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
