The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has received a request to increase the price of electricity by Rs1.73 per unit under the monthly fuel price adjustment mechanism.
According to NEPRA sources, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted an application seeking an increase in the electricity tariff. The proposed hike has been requested as part of the fuel price adjustment for August.
NEPRA officials said a hearing on the request has been scheduled for September 29, during which the regulator will review the details submitted by the power purchasing agency and determine whether the proposed increase should be approved.
Sources said that if the requested adjustment is approved, electricity consumers across the country could face an additional financial burden of around Rs29.5 billion.
The proposed adjustment is linked to changes in fuel costs incurred during the electricity generation process in August. The fuel price adjustment mechanism is used to account for fluctuations in generation costs and is periodically reflected in consumers’ electricity bills.
Under the government’s existing policy, the impact of the fuel price adjustment would apply to electricity consumers across the country, including those in Karachi.
The final impact on consumers will depend on NEPRA’s decision following the September 29 hearing. The regulator will examine the figures and relevant costs before determining the amount of any adjustment.
