Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon and Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States Rizwan Saeed Sheikh have called for a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
The two officials made the remarks during an interactive session with journalists at the Pakistan Embassy in Washington. Noon was in the US capital following his participation in engagements linked to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
During the meeting, Noon briefed media representatives on developments surrounding the Kashmir dispute and Pakistan’s position on its resolution. He said lasting peace and stability in South Asia were linked to resolving the dispute through the framework provided by the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
Ambassador Sheikh said the Kashmir dispute remained part of international and UN frameworks. He stressed that a peaceful settlement was important for regional and global peace, security and stability.
The officials’ comments came amid renewed diplomatic discussions on Kashmir during the UN General Assembly session. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar had also called for intensified diplomatic efforts and implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions during an OIC Contact Group meeting in New York earlier this month.
In a separate development, a group of Kashmiris living in Europe held a demonstration outside the United Nations office in Geneva on September 19. The protesters called for international attention to alleged rights violations in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir and urged implementation of pending UN resolutions.
