Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has said that Governor’s Rule could be imposed in the province if the situation deteriorates further, amid growing tensions between the federal and provincial governments.
The remarks came during a meeting between Governor Kundi and Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs Amir Muqam, where the worsening security and political situation in the province was discussed. Sources said both sides expressed concern over law and order and agreed that the continuation of Chief Minister Sohail Afridi’s government was creating difficulties for the province.
According to sources, Muqam said Governor’s Rule was a constitutional option and that a decision could be taken depending on the circumstances. He also described an in-house change in the provincial government as a possible way forward.
Kundi reportedly told the meeting that the federal government could move toward imposing Governor’s Rule if constitutional conditions were met. He also criticised the provincial government over its approach to the fight against terrorism.
The governor has separately said that Governor’s Rule is an extraordinary constitutional measure that could be implemented if the situation in KP deteriorates seriously. He said that, if required under the constitutional procedure, the President could impose Governor’s Rule on the advice of the prime minister.
The meeting also focused on the proposed PTI long march toward Islamabad. Kundi has urged the provincial government to postpone the march, arguing that the province cannot afford further political confrontation amid the prevailing security situation.
Muqam also proposed convening a conference of like-minded political parties to discuss the situation in KP and develop a joint strategy. The development comes as relations between the federal government and the PTI-led provincial administration continue to deteriorate over security, governance and political issues.
