Karachi Court acquits Anmol Alias Pinki in two more drug cases due to lack of evidence

KARACHI:  A local court in Karachi on Friday acquitted Anmol, also known as Pinki, in two additional narcotics cases registered in the city, citing insufficient evidence against the accused.

The latest verdict brings the total number of cases in which Pinki has been acquitted to five out of the 22 cases registered against her, according to the available information.

The two cases were registered with the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) in 2018 and at the Gizri police station. Following the court’s decision, the judge directed the police to release Pinki from the women’s jail if she was not required in connection with any other criminal case.

At the beginning of Friday’s hearing, Pinki was presented before the Additional District and Sessions Judge (South) through a video link. The proceedings concerned the two narcotics cases in which the court was required to examine the evidence and arguments presented by both sides.

After hearing the prosecution and defence, the judge concluded that the evidence was insufficient to sustain the charges in the two cases and ordered her acquittal.

The decision follows an earlier development in August, when another local court in Karachi acquitted Pinki in three narcotics cases registered at the Gizri police station. The latest ruling has further reduced the number of pending cases in which she remains implicated.

Pinki reportedly came under investigation following her arrest on May 12 during a joint operation conducted by police and a civilian intelligence agency at an apartment in Karachi’s Garden area.

At the time, authorities alleged that she was operating a drug supply network across the city. However, Pinki denied the allegations and reportedly claimed that she had been detained in Lahore approximately 15 days before being transferred to Karachi.

Following her arrest, officials stated that a weapon, cocaine and other narcotics, collectively valued at approximately Rs1.5 million, had been recovered from her possession.

During court proceedings on May 13, investigators reportedly informed the court that the operation had resulted in the seizure of 1,540 grams of cocaine and 6,970 grams of raw material allegedly associated with drug preparation.

The allegations and reported recoveries formed part of the investigations into the cases registered against her. However, the recent acquittals indicate that the court found the evidence insufficient to establish her guilt in the two cases under consideration.

Pinki’s case also attracted widespread public attention after a video showing her being escorted by police personnel at court premises without handcuffs circulated on social media.

The footage prompted criticism from social media users, with many questioning why she appeared to receive different treatment from other suspects in police custody. The incident generated debate over the handling of high-profile criminal suspects and the need for consistent law enforcement procedures.

The public reaction added to the attention surrounding the allegations against Pinki, although the controversy over her treatment in court was separate from the question of whether the prosecution could establish the charges against her.

With Friday’s decision, Pinki has now been acquitted in five of the 22 cases reportedly registered against her. The court’s release order remains conditional on whether she is wanted in any other case.

The latest ruling marks another legal development in the proceedings against Pinki, while the remaining cases will be subject to their respective judicial processes. An acquittal in the two cases does not, by itself, determine the outcome of the other cases registered against her.
