As liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices surged following the suspension of LPG supplies from Iran after closure of border, the LPG crisis is likely to be further deepened, it was reported on Tuesday.
Mohammad Ali Haider, vice chairman of the LPG Marketing Association, said prices rose by Rs100 per kilogram over the weekend following the withdrawal of the trade exemption and could climb further without immediate intervention.
He said that Rs80 to Rs100 increase was recorded in the prices of LPG during the last 24 hours.
In Karachi, the price of LPG has increased from Rs 420 to Rs 520 per kilogram.
If the Iranian border does not open, the price of LPG could rise by another Rs100 to Rs650 per kilogram.
Ali Haider said oil prices had shifted to daily adjustments after the war began, while LPG remained tied to advance monthly notifications disconnected from actual costs. Consequently, major players, including SSGC, SNGPL and Pak-Arab Refinery, avoid imports at notified rates, fearing accountability investigations.
