KABUL: A Kabul Institute report has raised concerns over the transparency of international humanitarian aid to Taliban-ruled Afghanistan, stating that public records lack details on the use and transfer of 91% of the assistance.
International organisations received $8 billion in humanitarian aid for Afghanistan over the past five years, with the United States, United Kingdom and Germany among the leading donors, according to the report.
Only $21.9 million in transfers from international organisations to other recipient organisations could be traced, the report said. It also identified 316 payments worth $1.42 billion in which recipients were listed as “confidential”.
International development institutions committed $12 billion to 1,208 projects in Afghanistan, separate from billions of dollars in grants reportedly provided directly to the Taliban administration, according to the report and experts.
Despite substantial international assistance, Afghans continue to face widespread poverty, while many seek opportunities abroad, including through irregular migration, experts say.
