PTI objects to representation on electoral reforms committee

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has raised objections to the proposed composition of the Electoral Reforms Committee and decided to convey its concerns to the federal government through the joint opposition, sources said.

According to sources, the government has initiated efforts to include PTI representatives in the committee, but the party has expressed reservations over the number of seats allocated to it.

PTI has objected to the proposed inclusion of only five of its members in the committee, while the government and its allied parties would have a combined representation of 15 members.

Sources said PTI has proposed that opposition parties should be given representation on the committee in proportion to their parliamentary strength.

The party has also decided that its objections and recommendations will be presented to the government through the joint opposition rather than on its own behalf.

According to sources, PTI will convene a meeting of the joint opposition on November 4 to discuss the proposed composition of the Electoral Reforms Committee and formulate a collective response.

All proposals concerning opposition representation and the committee’s composition will be presented during the meeting.

Sources said the joint opposition would finalize its position following consultations and subsequently convey a formal response to the federal government.

The development comes as the government seeks to include PTI in the electoral reforms process, while the party is demanding proportional representation for opposition lawmakers.
