MOSCOW: Russia on Wednesday said it was working to restore power supply in Crimea after Ukrainian strikes on the Moscow-occupied peninsula triggered blackouts and forced authorities to introduce emergency outages.
The Black Sea peninsula, which was seized from Ukraine by Russia in 2014, is a regular target for Ukrainian attacks that Kyiv says are in retaliation to Moscow’s assault.
Russia’s energy ministry said Ukraine had “carried out strikes on energy infrastructure facilities” overnight, cutting power off to residents of Crimea, which has a population of more than 2.5 million.
It did not specify how many households had been affected.
“To ensure the prompt elimination of the consequences of the attack and the phased restoration of electricity supply, schedules for temporary power outages are in effect,” the ministry said on Telegram.
Last month, a similar attack led to water and power cuts on the peninsula, according to Russian-installed authorities.
Ukraine says Russia is targeting its own energy grid with aerial barrages, leaving residents across the country without power as temperatures plunge ahead of winter.
In 2022, Russia launched a full-scale offensive against Ukraine from several directions, including from Crimea.
