The Punjab government has decided to impose an electricity duty on industrial and commercial consumers using more than 500 kVA of electricity, according to official documents obtained by Dunya News.
As per the Punjab Finance (Amendment) Bill 2025, which was passed by the Punjab Assembly without being referred to a committee, a duty of 4 paisa per unit will be levied on electricity consumption exceeding 500 kVA.
Under the bill, consumers using up to 500 kVA will be exempt from the new duty, while all domestic consumers will remain fully exempt. Institutions or entities operating generators exceeding 500 kVA will also be brought into the tax net.
The electricity duty for industrial and commercial consumers connected to the national grid will be collected through power distribution companies (DISCOs). Meanwhile, those using private electricity sources will pay the duty through Electric Inspectors.
The amendment introduces changes to the Punjab Finance Act, 1964, and will come into effect after final approval by the Governor of Punjab.
