Government trims debt further in September: State Bank

KARACHI: The government has brought down its debt by an additional Rs852 billion in September, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) reported on Thursday.

According to the SBP, the government’s total debt stood at Rs76,605 billion by the end of September 2025.

The data shows that domestic debt fell by Rs649 billion, giving the government some space to catch its breath amid ongoing fiscal pressures.

The report further reveals that external debt also went down by Rs203 billion during the month.

Overall, in the first quarter of the current fiscal year, the government has reduced its debt by Rs1,283 billion, a development that officials hope will help to ease the load on the national economy.

Economists say that while this downward trend provides a glimmer of hope, Pakistan still needs to stay on track with reforms to ensure long-term stability.
