X rolls out new Chat platform with major messaging features

X has started rolling out its long-awaited Chat platform, marking the most significant update to its messaging system since the introduction of direct messages.

The upgrade transforms the platform’s basic inbox into a modern suite of tools comparable to other contemporary messaging apps.

New features include voice and video calls, file sharing, message editing and deletion, as well as privacy options such as end-to-end encryption and screenshot alerts. The service is currently available on iOS and the web, with an Android version expected soon. X is also developing a voice memo feature for sending short audio messages.

Earlier this year, the company previewed parts of this overhaul, launching an initial version of encrypted messaging before pausing the rollout in May to address unspecified issues.

According to X’s updated help centre, the platform now supports encrypted group messaging and encrypted media, although some metadata – like recipient information – remains unprotected.

The help centre also warns that the system does not prevent man-in-the-middle attacks, meaning a malicious insider or X under legal obligation could potentially access encrypted chats without notifying users. The company is working on tools that will allow users to verify the authenticity of encrypted conversations.

While this update brings X closer to offering a full-fledged chat service, several security features are still in development.
